Need help upgrading from 0.0.1.3 to 0.0.2.7

Hi,

I have Custom Buttons Ver 0.0.1.3 running under Firefox 2.0.0.12; my OS is XP Home SP2. I think I have many custom buttons on all my toolbars, collecitvely, and used to back them up regularly (or backed up a list of them, I'm not sure which), now I've forgotten how to see the list of the Custom Buttons I have.

I now wish to upgrade to Custom Buttons Ver. 0.0.2.7, even though I realize some of my existing buttons may not work on this newer Version.

I would grateful for an outline of how to upgrade to 0.0.2.7, and keep as many of my existing buttons as possible. If I could remember how to generate a list of my existing buttons, I could print that list, uninstall Ver. 0.0.1.3, which I presume would cause all my current custom buttons to disappear, and then install Ver 0.0.2.7, and manually recreate as many of my existing Custom Buttons (or updated versions thereof) as possible (I seem to remember certain Custom Buttons only work with certain Versions of the Custom Button extension). But that's just a wild guess on the best way to proceed. Any advice from the pros will be much appreciated. Thanx. Nella

Hi Nella
This site is primarily for Custom Buttons² so the info you are requesting is quite sparce here.
There are 2 primary differences between 0.0.1.3 and 0.0.2.7:
  1. The buttond were stored in prefs in v 0.0.1.3 and are stored in buttonsoverlay.xul in v 0.0.2.7
  2. Custom buttons links in v 0.0.1.3 use
    Code: Select all
    ][
to seperate the fields and in v 0.0.2.7 the link is in xml format.
The path to upgrading is to:
  1. Backup prefs.js - This preserves your buttons in case there is an accident.
  2. Install v 0.0.2.7 over v 0.0.1.3
  3. The Extension should move the buttons from prefs.js to buttonsoverlay.xul on its own.
Regards
George

Additionally, many of the buttons on this forum may not work on Custom Buttons 0.0.2.7. Reason being that Custom Buttons2 buttons many times use additional features that are currently only available in Custom Buttons2

Thank you SCClockDr and nicholas for making me realize that I didn't appreciate all my options when I first posted. At the time, I "thought" I wanted to upgrade from Ver. 0.0.1.3 to ver. 0.0.2.7 (updated Wednesday to 0.0.2.8 ) of the original Custom Buttons extension.

But now you both have opened my eyes to the fact that while the Custom Buttons extension continues to be updated, a similar but distinct extension, Custom Buttons2, is where there is currently more development, button options, support, etc.; i.e., Custom Buttons2 is where the action is (and of course an active forum). Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Are there advantages to sticking with Custom Buttons extension alone, and upgrading to Ver 0.0.2.8 as compared to my making the transition, now, to the Custom Buttons2 extension?

Is there any point to having the latest version of "both" extensions (i.e., Custom Buttons and Custom Buttons2) installed under Firefox, assuming that is even technically possible?

Assuming I decide to migrate to Custom Buttons2 and abandon the Custom Buttons extension, then I think I will need a different approach than SCClockDr laid out for me pursuant to my original request.

At first blush, from reading the Custom Buttons2 developer notes, it would appear that if I first upgrade my Custom Buttons extension from Ver. 0.0.1.3, to Ver. 0.0.2.1 or higher (I would upgrade to Ver. 0.0.2.8 ), I could then "save" my buttons in use under Custom Buttons, in a file. Then I think I could uninstall my Custom Buttons extension, install Custom Buttons2, and then "import" the buttons previously saved by Ver. 0.0.2.8. The above is just a wild guess on what path might work for me.

It isn't critical that I maintain my existing buttons functioning under my installed Custom Buttons extension, as part of the transition, although it would be nice. I would expect that some of my existing buttons, that work with the Custom Buttons extension, even if imported by Custom Buttons2, might not work. Perhaps I should spare myself the trouble of trying to salvage some of my existing buttons, and just start from scratch building new buttons with the latest version of the Custom Buttons2 extension.

Sorry for being long-winded.

I would be grateful for your thoughts. Nella

I wouldn't necessarily start from scratch.

Probably the easiest way to save your buttons would be to simply:
  1. Right-click the button
  2. Copy to clipboard
  3. Save in your bookmarks
    1. Bookmarks
    2. Organize Bookmarks...
    3. New Bookmark...
    4. Paste the clipboard to the location of the bookmark and name appropriately
  4. Upon uninstallation of the old extension and reinstallation of new you should be able to go through the bookmarks and click on them to install

Alternatively, you could use this to aid in the bookmarking task, if you have userChrome.js installed.

As for "benefits" of having both extensions... none. Actually it will certainly be problematic since they are using the same namespace.

What Nicholas said.
OR
Upgrade to 0.0.2.7 or 8 that puts the buttons in the xul file. Once there they will be preserved even if you uninstall.
If you wish to upgrade to Custom Buttons² then uninstall v0.0.2.7/8 and then install the latest version of Custom Buttons². All your buttons should display tho as you say some may be in-op till some mods are made.

BTW both versions are being actively developed. the 0.0.2* branch is a more minimal extension requiring more code in the button. Custom Buttons² is more robust in function and footprint so that many tasks are handled within the ext. reducing the button footprint.

SCClockDr and nicholas,

Belatedly responding to thank you for your last posts with suggestions, to me. I decided not to first upgrade Custom Buttons, and instead simply uninstalled Custon Buttons and then installed the latest version of Custom Buttons². Am now rebuilding my Custom Buttons inventory. Appreciate your guidance. Nella
