Updating installed buttons

I've done this a few times already so thought i'd ask: a button gets updated, i right click a link (usually in the first post of a thread), Copy location, right click my button/Update... and pooph! "Not a valid link, etc." pops up. Since i don't update buttons all that often, i forget how it works and try it again only to realize that i need to get to the Buttons Database forum and copy/update from there.
That kind of bugs me, just a bit 'cause as i've said, i don't update often (enough to scream too loud every time).
I think there's something wrong with the forum layout if we have to jump all over the place to update. Or, looking for a button, find two posts (database and discussion), figure where you are just to ask a Q or install a button (from discussion thrown back to database or backwards).
At this point it's just a request for advice - i may be doing something wrong (don't think so :P ) and there's an easier way to do this things (other than pay attention!)?

And one other thing - is there a way to exclude images from buttons update?

Hi makondo

If you hover over the link the actual link contents display in the status bar if visible. That is how I determine if I am looking at a normal link or a custombuttons link. A right click of the link will fail to produce a "View Custom Button Codes" item in the context menu for normal links. That is another way to keep them straight.

Thanks George! You see, i did right click for code and when it didn't show i said WTF?!.... or something like that 'cause i thought it'd show on any button' link. I know better now, thanks.

Any thoughts on #2 - don't change images when updating a button? TIA!

Hi makondo

There is not a means to update a button w/o also updating the image. In this way you can update the x button with the y button and when you are done the x button is now a y button.

I would suggest you create a button for that specific task. You will need to supply the id of the button you are wanting to update, like the Edit Button.

My entry for this in the beginner's guide is going to be...

"Wa-a-ay too technical for this bit... go ask makondo how it works!" :)

I keep tripping up over myself when doing this and just run through the normal install procedure and swap out the buttons - changing images if I've got a different one to the original.

Maybe it needs to be menu driven...?

    Update from clipboard
Place the new version in Customise Toolbars window
Directly replace the button on the toolbar

A nice challenge for a new button or context menu choice :)
Regards and stuff,
Richard.

I have no problem updating either way (other than forgetting what forum i'm at) - 1) copy/paste code or 2) copy link/update button from context menu. Using the first method i don't have to look up my image and change it but it takes 'show code>select all>copy>open a button>ini tab>select all>paste>OK'. The second method is less involved 'copy link location>drop a button's context menu>update button>OK' but then i have to change the image again.

squeaky, you need the Import Button. Makes installing 'em real easy and fast.

I switched my button ^ for a link to the one in the Buttons Database to avoid possible confusion, per nicholas request (the linked page looks funny with all those codes in display - don't know why). Now, there's an Import Button that comes with the ext. and its ID is 0 (find it in the Customize window). Since i change images on my buttons, that one used to change the image with every update too, pain. George suggested to have another one on the toolbar, this one i can customize and leave the ID=0 alone, in the Customize bin. Works for me.
